Description

Abstract figurative painting in acrylic and gold leaf by Alexandra Kay Vøhtz.

With her right arm clutched around bent legs, the figure leans to one side, chin downcast. Cursive script is scrawled in multiple directions across her face and body; the words muted or erased by heavy brush strokes imbuing the painting with a chaotic, yet melancholic energy. This is enhanced by the use of dark blue and black tones in the top right-hand and lower left-hand corners, providing depth which works to amplify the intensity of the lighter colours used in the centre of the painting. These darker spaces further form an oppressive element as if the woman is being confined or held down by a heavy weight. This is a stark contrast to the luminous white in her cheek, hip, and knee which frame the bright colours running through her body. These colours draw focus to her breast and stomach; the curled posture perhaps indicating towards a source of pain or discomfort. Here, the coral-red coursing down her throat, collides with the mustard-yellow enveloping the script, whilst rufous strokes spill over her thigh; this complex use of colour and tangled limbs rendering a sensation which is raw and unsettling.
